I don’t like language apps with streaks, push notifications and monthly fees. The only learning that sticks for me is the low-effort kind that fits into what I already do. So I set up Gemini to mix words from a new language into its answers while I use it for normal tasks.
Setup in Gemini
- Open Settings and Health in Gemini.
- Click Personal Context.
- Enter your instructions in the text field.
I use these rules: answer with bullet points, keep answers short, quick and fast, and never use Google Workspace. Then I add the immersion line:
For each answer you give me include some Italian / Albanian words.
I currently use Italian and Albanian, but you can use any language. I also tell Gemini to throw in a positive affirmation once in a while. If it is in every message you stop noticing it, but as an occasional surprise it works.
Why “Never use Google Workspace”
When Gemini tries to pull data from Drive or Gmail, a permission pop-up appears. If you click deny, the whole chat session freezes and you have to start a new one. That rule keeps it from happening.
Raising the difficulty
- Level 1: a few words mixed into English sentences.
- Level 2: ask for 25% of the answer in the target language.
- Level 3: 50%, then 75% as you understand more.
- Level 4: 100%, asking for a translation only when you are stuck.
What it looks like
I tested it with everyday questions. When I asked about photography (aperture, depth of field, shutter speed), the answer used some words from my target languages. When I asked for houseplants that survive in low light, such as snake plants and ZZ plants, Gemini added the Italian phrase “tiauguro una bona gernada” (wishing me a good day) and the Albanian word “shume” (very, a lot), with translations. The advice itself was still useful.

Where it falls short
- It does not label languages. Gemini gives you the word and the translation but not which language it is. With two similar languages, like Spanish and Italian, you would not know which is which. Italian and Albanian are different enough for me.
- You can skip over it. When you are in a hurry, your brain filters out the foreign words and goes straight to the English. You have to make yourself read them.
How I rank it
In my ranking of ways to learn a language, this is number 2. Watching movies and seeing real usage is number 1. Moving to the country is number 3, the best method but the hardest to do. This setup is free, takes about five minutes and beats a subscription app for me. A few ideas to start: open Gemini, paste the rules, add “For each answer you give me include some [your language] words”, and ask a question about your hobby.
